SOS Children's Village

The lack of water in the rural areas led to strong rural exodus, thereby causing the poor social situations in Praia. This brought about the idea  of building a second SOS Children's Village in 1997. Construction of the second SOS Children's Village was completed in 2002.

It is located in  Ribeivao Chiquerio, a town in Sao Domingos, about 10 km from the capital, Praia. The facility has been in operation since 1 January, 2003, and has a capacity of about 80 children. It includes, 8 family houses, village director's house, aunt's house, administration and service area.

The children have already integrated into their new homes and are taking advantage of the games, the park and playing  with their new siblings.

Since its establishment, the SOS Children's Village has created regular links with the people of Ribeivao Chiquerio, which has enabled them to organise meetings and to actively participate in the development of the town. Inhabitants from the community have begun visiting the children's village. The village has also organised educative and sports  programmes where about 270 children from the community attended.

The educational standard of the community is very low. The village has started extra classes for the children to make up for the lapses at the primary school.
