SOS Hermann Gmeiner School

SOS Hermann Gmeiner SchoolAs one of the associated SOS projects the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was built in 1984. The school consists of 13 classrooms, a reading room also used as a Library, a canteen and an administrative block. It also has other sporting facilities such as a basketball  and tennis lawn which is also used for handball, as well as a football field.

The school started as a primary school in the early 80's but by the mid 80's, demands had increased from parents who wanted their children to attend the Hermann Gmeiner School. For this reason, it was extended to a secondary level. The school was however closed in 1990 due to the raging civil war. It was later opened in 1992 to both SOS children and the community. In 1996, the school was closed down again following the rebel incursion into the city, Monrovia, and reopened in the late 90's but this time only to the SOS Children. Daily tutorial classes for only SOS students were conducted depending on the situation. Renovations began on the school in 1999 and the school is expected to re-open for the coming academic year.

The school finally started full operation in 2000. Presently, it has a total enrolment of 318 (210 pupils in the Primary school and 108 in the Junior Secondary School). Subjects offered in the school are based on the national curriculum. The programme is enhanced with additional extra curricular and community activities. Teaching in the vocational areas such as, sewing, home economics and typing are also included in the school's curriculum. The school has an aim to educate without discrimination, foster a continuous learning process and develop the potentials that will help students to acquire knowledge and develop self-esteem.

All SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools operate a full day programme with supervised homework sessions. The school has also established a special program for children with learning disabilities.

Since the civil war started, many schools have been damaged and the few that have been renovated are unable to meet the normal standard. As a result of this, the SOS International School still remains the best in terms of quality in all aspects.
