SOS-Kinderdorf International became active in Liberia in August 1978. The work of SOS has grown enormously over the past 25 years.
Apart from establishing the SOS Children's Village, other associated projects have also been established. These facilities are not only being used by the SOS children, but also by those in the surrounding communities. The Village in Matadi, Monrovia, comprises of 15 family houses, an SOS Kindergarten, an SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, a small block used as a village clinic, the SOS Youth home and also a small residence used by the Village Director.

Due to the country's social problems and particularly the growing number of orphans, Mrs Victoria Tolbert, wife of the then president of Liberia contacted Dr. Hermann Gmeiner in 1970, to persuade him of establishing an SOS Children's Village in Liberia. He agreed to the idea and consequently, the government transferred a property in matadi for the work of the SOS Children's Villages.

As one of the associated SOS projects the SOS Hermann Gmeiner School was built in 1984. The school consists of 13 classrooms, a reading room also used as a Library, a canteen and an administrative block. It also has other sporting facilities such as a basketball and tennis lawn which is also used for handball, as well as a football field. |

The SOS Kindergarten is an integral part of the SOS Children's Village.
The SOS Kindergarten Monrovia has been in operation since 1981. It has excellent educational facilities and well trained and dedicated educators. The Kindergarten includes, 4 classrooms, a classroom for Montessori education, Kitchen, a multipurpose hall and ancillary rooms. It has a capacity of about 100 pupils. |

The SOS Youth Facility is situated within the SOS Children's Village. It comprises of two apartments, each containing 20 rooms. Presently, there are 22 youths living in the facility. There is also an additional facility for the Youth Educator, and a kitchen where the preparation of the daily meals is done. The aim of this facility is to serve as a home for the adolescent boys who at the age of 14 leave their family houses. The idea is that the boys are learning how to become independent. |
