The Youth Hostel

The Youth facility has been in operation since 1983. It has 3 houses and a capacity of 18 youths. There is also  a kitchen where the preparation of the daily meals is done. The aim of the Youth Hostel is to serve as a home for this category of youngsters, who at the age of 14 leave their family houses and move towards a more independent life. They manage their household allowances, shop, cook, clean and do their own laundry. The youth educators usually assist them in making their decisions. The youths also attend monthly counselling  and career guidance sessions.

The youths stay in the hostel until they are about 19-20 years old. They are then either resettled or moved on to a transit facility. 16 youths were partially resettled and are all living within the community.

Today, it caters for 735 pupils and students in SOS Hermann Gmeiner Schools, both in Freetown and Bo. This facility includes a school canteen for all pupils of the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Primary and Secondary Schools, and partially also for their parents. It is a programme which plays a vital role in sustaining the pupils for their 7 hrs spent in school and is highly appreciated by parents and guardians.
