On the Way to a World Record ? an Artist's Diary

 

 

The Austrian artist Herbert Wallner has come to The Gambia to establish his second world record - the tallest painting ever made by one man. The painting will be sold to the profit of SOS Children's Villages, to finance the extension of the SOS Regional Mothers and Adult Training Centre* in Bakoteh.  Hosted in the premises of SOS Children's Villages The Gambia, the artist has been preparing for his gigantic work, as well as meeting plenty new people and discovering a new culture. Mama, School! School!

 

 

In The Gambia, just like in many other African countries, many girls are still kept home to help with the daily chores or withdrawn from school to be married.  Even though the government is doing its best to promote and support girls' education, early marriage is still not forbidden by the law and sensitisation is the only key to make things change. Getting Together to Have Fun!

 

 

From 5 to 7 April 2007, 129 orphans and vulnerable children from Bajagarr and the surrounding communities got together in Bajagarr for a very special event. Organised by the family strengthening programme of SOS Children's Villages The Gambia in collaboration with the child welfare committee of the area and the children's care-givers, the three day holiday camp gathered children from 5 to 18 and took place in the community multi-purposed centre.

On the Way for a Second World Record!

 

Early March 2007, Herbert Wallner spent a week in The Gambia to get a better feeling of Africa and meet with SOS Children's Villages The Gambia and the children, to discuss about his gigantic project. Famous for having established in 2006 the world record for the longest painting ever made by one man, the 43-year-old Austrian artist is now getting ready for his second world record, the one of the highest painting. A big challenge indeed, considering it will be realised in the smallest country of Africa, in a different working environment.
