SOS-Kinderdorf International has been active in the Gambia since 1980. The first SOS Children's Village in The Gambia was founded in Bakoteh in 1982 and includes a Kindergarten. Between 1984 and 2005, various SOS facilities and programme were set up in Bakoteh: an SOS Training & Production Centre, an SOS H.G. Technical S.S.S., an SOS Youth Village, an SOS Mother & Child Clinic, an SOS Regional Adult Training Centre, an SOS H.G. Lower & Upper Basic School and a Family Strengthening Programme. Today, there are 140 children and youths in the SOS Children's and Youth Villages in Bakoteh, and more than 5000 children benefit from the other SOS facilities and programme in Bakoteh.

In 2007, a new SOS Children's Village, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS H.G. Lower & Upper Basic School will open their doors in Basse. In addition, a Family Strengthening Programme should start in 2008. Up to 120 children will be cared for in the SOS Children's Village in Basse, and 600 should benefit from the other SOS facilities and programmes.



SOS Family Strengthening Programme

Started in 2005, the programme's aim is to support families and communities to develop their capacities to effectively protect and care for their vulnerable children. In The Gambia, the programme targets 500 children bellow 18 years from various areas of the Western Division who are either orphans, living in an orphan household or infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

SOS Children's Village

The SOS Children's Village Bakoteh, located 15 km from capital Banjul, was founded in 1982. Initially, the village started with 6 family houses, but today, there are 10 family houses, 2 transit houses for orphaned and abandoned babies, a small administration, a guest house and an accomodation for the village director. Almost 100 children of different age groups live with their SOS mothers in the family houses in Bakoteh.

SOS Youth Facilities

The  SOS Youth Village Bakoteh was constructed in 1985. Situated between the Vocational Training Center and the Technical High School, the youth village consists of 5 accommodation blocks for the youths and one family house for the youth supervisor.

The youth facility is established as a home for the adolescent boys and it is there that they learn how to become independent. They manage their household allowances, shop, cook, clean and do their laundry themselves.

SOS Kindergarten

SOS KindergartenThe SOS Kindergarten Bakoteh is an integral part of the SOS Children's Village. It has excellent educational facilities where well trained and dedicated educators teach almost 200 SOS and local children from the community. Both Froebel and Montessori methods are used which give the children a 'head start' for Primary School.

SOS Lower & Upper Basic School

SOS-Kinderdorf International built this project in the new millennium. It is situated between the Technical High School and the Regional Office for North/West Africa.

With a capacity of over 550 students, the school provides a strong fondation in academic and vocational education to SOS children as well as community children, which will be consolidated in Senior Secondary School.

SOS Hermann Gmeiner Technical Secondary School

Built in 1990 and situated  in a pleasant compound, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Technical Senior Secondray School has excellent facilties and resources. Over 600 students including SOS youths and those from the community are taught subjects based on the national curriculum with an emphasis on technical and vocational areas. The programme is also enhanced with extra curricular and community activities

SOS Vocational Training and Production Center

The SOS Vocational Training and Production Center started its operation in 1985. The center was set up to cater for the vocational needs of the SOS youth as well as those from the local community. Considered to be one of the best in the Gambia, the training and production centre is purposely set up to stare for the vocationl needs of our SOS youths and also those fron the local community.

SOS Mothers/Adult Training Center

The attractive complex also renowned as "Centre of Excellence" opened its doors in 1999. Located next to the SOS Mother and Child Clinic, the SOS Mothers/Adult Training Centre provides various trainings to SOS mothers from the North/West Africa Region and Senegal as well as people from the community.

SOS Mother & Child Clinic

SOS Mother & Child ClinicIn response to the saying, 'Health is Wealth', SOS-Kinderdorf International has established clinics in all SOS Children's Villages around the world. The SOS Mother & Child Clinic is built in a spacious ground next to the SOS Children's Village Bakoteh. The clinic was inaugurated in 1997 and is the biggest SOS clinic in the region of North West Africa. The main aim of the SOS Mother & Child Clinic is to provide medical care for all SOS children and employees and also to members of the surrounding community. This includes giving regular immunizations, antenatal care for expectant mothers as well as general medical aid.

SOS National Office
The SOS National Office is the administrative body that supervises and coordinates all SOS affairs in the Gambia. The National Office is located in the same building as the SOS-Kinderdorf International Regional Office and was established in 1996.
