Juah Town Projects
village

This is the second SOS Children's Village in Liberia. It is located in Grand Bassa County, specifically Juah Town (a major city out of Monrovia, that is, in the country's interior). The foundation stone was laid in 1988 and the construction works were near to completion in 1990 when the seven-year civil crisis began. Due to the out break of the terrible civil war which was particularly fierce in the country's interior, the village could not start operating. However, renovation on the village has been completed and started full operation in August 2000. It was officially opened on 25 September, 2002 by Mr. Helmut Kutin, current president of SOS-Kinderdorf International.

The village has a capacity of 60 children, but presently has a total number of 47 children in its care. The facility includes, 6 family houses, the village director's house, a guest house, an administration and service building and a small clinic. The village conducts counselling sessions for the mothers but is also extended to the children if there is a need. These sessions are mostly conducted by the mother counsellor who is also a trained social worker.

kindergarten

The SOS Kindergarten Juah Town has been operating since September 2000. It has a capacity of 75 students, four classrooms and ancillary rooms, four teaching staff and a principal. The Kindergarten also operates morning sessions for the children, which aim to help them make a smooth transition from family to school life. A toddlers' class has also been added for SOS children from age two and more. The establishment of a toddlers' class is also to help SOS mothers have enough time to do their household work while the kids are in school. The toddlers' class is also open to kids from the community.

The SOS Kindergarten is an integral part of the SOS Children's Village. It has excellent educational facilities and well trained and dedicated educators. Like all other SOS schools, it operates on the international policy for SOS Schools.

school

Juah Town was one of the areas hardest hit by the seven-year civil war. The inhabitants are mostly farmers and are barely subsisting. Children of this community are obliged to do farm work or attend bush schools known as the "Poro" for the boys and "Sande" for the girls. Due to the lack of good schools and the low standard of education within the community, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School was established and has been in operation since September 2000. It has a capacity of about 315 students. The Hermann Gmeiner International School is inclusive of a Primary and Secondary section. The SOS Primary School in Juah Town is the only one existing in the community.

Presently, there are about 72 students on roll. The facility includes 12 classrooms, physics and chemistry labs, an administration service area and a playground. A special programme has been set up for children with learning disabilities. It operates on the International Policy of all SOS schools in the region.

There are no other Primary and Secondary schools in the community, so the Hermann Gmeiner school remains the best.
