village

In operation since July 2007, the village was officially inaugurated on 23 October 2008 in the presence of Mr Richard Pichler, Secretary-General for SOS-Kinderdorf International.

Being a new Village with only young children, SOS Children's Village Canchungo still shows all the excitement of a new beginning. Like in many other Villages, boys are particularly fond of football, but here girls are also very much into it.The village, which is composed of 12 family houses, a village director's house, an aunts' house and administration and service building has a capacity of 120 children. By the end of 2007, 60 children (27 boys and 33 girls) were living in SOS Children's Village Canchungo.

The SOS Kindergarten of Canchungo opened its doors in October 2007. Its 4 classrooms offered a colourful and conducive learning and playing environment to 113 children during the 2007/2008 school year, out of which 27 came from SOS Children's Village Bissau.

Using among other the Montessori Method, the SOS Kindergarten Gabu gives its pupils a "headstart" for Primary School. SOS Kindergarten pupils are also taught English as a foreign language.
school
In operation since October 2007, this primary school comprising 6 classrooms, a multi-purpose hall and an administration and service area can accommodate 210 pupils. Being one of Guinea-Bissau's reference schools in term of quality, SOS Hermann Gmeiner Primary School Bissau also ensures its students all learn a foreign language (English) and become computer literate.

The SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Canchungo had 121 pupils registered for the 2007/2008 school year. 26 of them came from SOS Children's Village Canchungo.
